Recently I noticed the beach at one of my neighbors was covered with tiny little white pellets. The next day I discovered these same pellets on my shoreline, several houses away. A short trip up and down the lake in my boat revealed these pellets path covered about 2000 feet of shoreline. Some pellets and clumps of pellets were still floating off shore traveling down-lake. Unfortunately I did not find the source of these pellets in my search, it was a mystery.
Then later that afternoon some friends stopped by. They had been out on the lake that afternoon as well and saw the pellets. Fortunately they had discovered the source. The pellets were pieces of low-density Styrofoam from an old swimming raft. The Styrofoam under the raft was so old the action of the waves was able to break pieces off.
After a call to the raft owners, I found that they knew the raft was on it's last legs but were trying to get 'just one more summer' out of it. I was assured it would be removed and scraped. Hopefully no environmental damage was done.
Let that be a warning to all of us, watch what you put into the lake!
